There are other lodging options in the region depending what you are looking for.
Traditional hotels may be available, but most require at least a 20 minute or more drive. In my simple internet searches I found a range of hotels within 30-60 minutes away from about $125 a night.
Airbnb.com or other home rental options seem readily available with some great rates depending on your style (whole home, room, or apt style). Some of these start around $65 a night and are relatively close to Smuggs.
There are also camping options within a 30-60 minute drive also. If you search for camping places you can find a range of tenting and cabin options with a wide range of costs. Some of these fill early so you may want to secure this option as early as possible.
Some families chose to stay in Stowe last year which has an even wider range of lodging options. This will require you to drive over the pass each day. This is certainly doable but is a consideration you'll need to make when deciding.
